A Springfield Township couple has been reunited with $12,000 the two lost Wednesday in Akron.
The money was found by a woman and her husband walking near the corner of Pauline and Priscilla avenues in Ellet. The woman contacted police, who in turn contacted the Springfield couple.
“We just did what Jesus would have done,” the Akron woman, 63, said Friday. She asked that her name not be used. “My father was a minister and he always told me: ‘Just do the right thing.’ ”
The woman told police she was walking in the Ellet neighborhood Wednesday about 8:15 p.m. when she noticed a tan cloth bag with a zipper lying in the middle of the road. The bag contained $12,000 and miscellaneous papers.
Police took the bag and combed through the paperwork inside. They eventually located the Springfield couple, who came to the department to retrieve the money on Thursday. The two told police they planned to use the money to buy a house out of state.
The Akron woman said she and her husband met the Springfield couple after the money was returned. She declined to discuss the meeting or say whether a reward was offered.
“They’re Christians and we’re Christians. God just kept his hand on that money,” the woman said.
Akron police say such recoveries are rare. But with all the bad news in the world, even officers were moved by the kindness shown around the holiday season.
“With today’s economy and the way things are, to have someone find the money and turn it in, they’re very lucky it was found by such an honest couple,” said police Lt. Rick Edwards.
