Women and their middle names - why do most women use them? Men don't see the need.
I see this more and more, or perhaps I am just noticing it more. Let's say there is an article written by a man and woman. Nine times out of ten, the woman will be identified as <First Name / Middle Name (Maiden name) / Last Name>. As perhaps (made-up name) Elaine Winterfield Sanders. However, the man is almost always identified as <First Name / Last Name> (example: Morton Sanders).

You see this in almost all professional settings: meetings, program introductions, publications, joint authorship, etc. Even women who write letters to the editor tend to use all three names, when men use two.

So here are my questions:

Do women do this to in some way commemorate their pre-marriage family names?

Do women do this to feel important and professional on the assumption that three names and multiple syllables in some way makes people take them more seriously?

Do women do this to compensate for some of the names that they were given as kids?

Is it something else?
