The early part of the 19th century (the 1800's) is known as the Regency era. Fashions of the day were soft and feminine. Long flowing gowns made of finely woven muslin took inspiration from classical Greek lines. Empire style dresses featured high waistlines and small, capped sleeves.

By 1825, the Empire look had disappeared to be replaced by the Regency Romantic style. Waistlines fell to the normal waist and skirts took on a new shape with flouncing and padding at the hem.
